Jonathan Hettinger

Senior Global Real Estate Advisor, Licensed Salesperson

Jonathan Hettinger is a top producer of the Sotheby's International Realty - Downtown Manhattan Brokerage and was named a leading agent by REAL Trends 2022 America’s Best List. He has a particular expertise and passion for townhouses and pre-war buildings. In one of the most significant downtown townhouse sales in 2016, he and colleague Mark Amadei represented the sellers in the 'quiet' sale of 138-140 West 11th Street for $31 million, one of the highest prices realized for an unrenovated downtown townhouse at that time. In 2017, he represented the purchaser of the iconic Pentagram Building at 204 Fifth Avenue (formerly home of the legendary 1980's nightclub MK) in a transaction valued at $29.5 million. One year later, he represented the new owners in the off-market sale of the same building to Spanish ceramics retailer Porcelanosa for $42.4 million, representing a 44% gain in 12 months. In 2019, he represented the buyer of the 50 ft. wide loft building located at 239-243 West 18th Street, which housed noted photographer William Wegman's studio, in a transaction valued at $21 million. In 2021, he represented the seller of the 25 ft wide mansion located at 25 West 10th Street in the Gold Coast section Greenwich Village, which sold for $19 million. In 2022, he arranged for the off-market sale of 267 West 11th Street, located on one of the most desirable blocks of the West Village, for $23 million. Given his background in private banking, Jonathan excels in discreet, private transactions like this, in which the sellers prefer to avoid the exposure of a public sale.

Jonathan graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor of arts degree and honors in economics. As part of his studies at Princeton, he attended Cambridge University in England for his entire junior year, studying development economics, and worked two summers at Allianz Insurance in Munich, Germany, winning the Princeton German prize on his return.

In addition to his brokerage expertise, Jonathan also has valuable experience as a real estate investor, acting as principal. Beginning in 1998, he purchased, renovated and profitably exited from 10 properties in Florida and the Northeast over a 10-year period. The discipline required to seek attractively priced properties, renovate them according to exacting standards and then strategically position them from a marketing standpoint gives Jonathan a unique perspective in advising clients as to their optimal strategy, whether buying or selling.

Prior to joining Sotheby's International Realty, Jonathan was Managing Director of the Latin America Enterprise Private Equity Fund in Miami for 10 years, where he co-managed $400 million entrusted to the fund by university endowments, including Harvard and Stanford. As part of his duties at the fund, Jonathan served on the boards of several companies, including the Caterpillar Equipment Corp. (Venezuela) and Parque del Sendero (Chile.) While at the Fund, he relished the opportunity to live in Argentina, Chile and Mexico for several years and became fluent in Spanish.

Jonathan is a member of The Real Estate Board of New York and is Vice President and Secretary of The Natalia Mental Health Foundation. Aside from being fluent in Spanish, he is conversant in Italian and German.
